Hey, I'm Coach Jo!

As an entrepreneur, educator, counselor, career guide, and above all—a mother—I know how overwhelming the college admissions journey can feel.

Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding more than 1,000 students, watching them transform from uncertain and stressed to confident and prepared.

What is a virtual research program?

A virtual research program gives high school students the chance to work with university professors and research mentors online. Instead of being limited to a physical lab, students attend live classes, meet in small groups, and get guided through research methods, data analysis, and academic writing—all from home.

How does my teen actually do research without being in a lab?

Most high school research focuses on literature-based projects (reviewing and analyzing published studies), data-driven projects (using real datasets), or theoretical frameworks (developing ideas and models). These are the same approaches used in university-level seminars—and they often result in publishable papers.

Are these group or one-on-one sessions?

Both. Each program includes live group sessions with professors and writing mentors, plus individual 1:1 sessions for personalized feedback. Typically:

BASIC PACKAGE:

- 8 sessions with the Research Professor

- 8 sessions with the Writing Mentor

- 2 one-on-one meetings with the Research Professor

- 2 one-on-one meetings with the Writing Mentor

PREMIUM PACKAGE:

- 8 sessions with the Research Professor

- 8 sessions with the Writing Mentor

- 4 one-on-one meetings with the Research Professor

- 4 one-on-one meetings with the Writing Mentor

What’s included in the program?

Students complete a 10–12 week guided research experience, where they:

- Learn foundations of the subject (Neuroscience, Cancer, etc.)

- Explore real scientific literature and datasets

- Develop their own research question

- Write a 4,000+ word academic paper

- Present their work in a final session

- Get feedback from professors and writing mentors

Every student finishes with a research paper draft suitable for journal submission.

Who teaches my teen?

Your child will learn from:

- A University Research Professor (decades of teaching & publications, experts in neuroscience, cancer biology, or immunology depending on program)

- A Creative Writing/Scientific Writing Mentor (experienced in academic writing, published author, or former research director)

Our faculty have mentored graduate students, medical students, and 30+ high schoolers each, so your teen is in professional hands.

What are the program dates?

Neuroscience Research Program: September 14 – November 16, 2025 (Sundays, 4:30 PM EST)
Cancer Research Program: October 19 – December 21, 2025 (Sundays, 4:30 PM EST)

What if my teen misses a class?

Recordings are available through our Learning Management Portal. Students are expected to attend live whenever possible, and may only miss up to 2–3 sessions.

Will my teen’s paper be published?

We do not guarantee publication, because acceptance depends on quality, rigor, and the journal’s criteria.

However, students receive full mentorship on topic selection, writing, and submission. Many of our past students have been published.

What kind of research do students do virtually?

Projects are usually literature reviews, data analyses, or theoretical frameworks.

Students read peer-reviewed papers, analyze findings, and create original perspectives under mentor guidance. This mirrors real undergraduate-level research seminars.
